Justin Bloss | The Marinade Episode 182

Justin is a singer and songwriter from Tulsa, Oklahoma, whose latest record Claymore snuck onto my favorite albums of 2024 list just under the wire. Don’t just take my word for it. John Moreland and BJ Barham among others have been singing his praises as well. Just give the record a spin after you listen to this conversation.

Daryl Hance | The Marinade Episode 177

Daryl Hance is a songwriter and guitar player from Duval County, Florida, whose music has been in my life for over twenty years.

I first learned of Daryl during his time with the band Mofro, now J.J. Grey and Mofro. He hasn’t been with that band for a while and since gone on to carve a handful of wonderful solo records. I’ve long said his guitar playing is like a fingerprint. Maybe it’s the Florida boy in me. Maybe it’s the country boy in me. That swampy sound so few can capture with authenticity is hyper-present in Daryl’s work and I am ready for more and more.

Daryl’s latest record is called “Devil’s Millhopper,” it is available wherever you consume music, and you can buy a digital copy on bandcamp.com.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 114 | Michael McDermott Returns

To paraphrase BJ Barham, Michael McDermott has come out of the darkness to be the light.

His illustrious career goes back to the late 80s. For many folks he is the best songwriter you’ve never heard of. For others he is the voice of multiple generations. His most recent record St. Paul’s Boulevard is my favorite thing he has done. McDermott builds a world and trusts himself and his collaborators to guide but not lead the listener. It’s an immersive experience much like this conversation with the man himself.

Daryl Hance saunters into The Marinade. Daryl is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player whose music means SO much to me. He has a distinct way of playing guitar that I adore. Just a couple of licks and I can instantly recognize a Daryl Hance tune. Describing his music is a next to impossible task. It feels like the soundtrack to my life- swampy, bluesy, funky, sexy, soulful stuff. I am honored to bring this one to you.

Erika sits down with us backstage at The Plaza Live in Orlando, FL, before her show with Lucinda Williams and Drive-by Truckers. We talk about her experience with ayahuasca, how hiking in Big Bend opened the creative spigot and even enjoy a silent cameo from Patterson Hood of Drive-by Truckers.
