Emily Scott Robinson | The Marinade Episode 193

Emily Scott Robinson is our guest for Episode 193 of The Marinade! NPR has said of her, “With her pure, bracing vocal set against an achingly somber piano, Emily Scott Robinson doesn't marinate in misery so much as summon the strength to venture up to a precipice and stand at "the edge of something wild.”

Yep! That’s Emily. She’s a skilled songwriter who is dedicated to her craft, a powerhouse singer, and a really fun conversation partner! I have wanted to make this conversation happen for years and am so grateful for the opportunity. We caught up via Zoom recently- her from her home in Colorado and me from a hotel room in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during my third annual Grounded Summer Tour. Check out this podcast feed for more on that.

S.G. Goodman | The Marinade Episode 192

S.G. Goodman is a singer and songwriter from Hickman, KY, who now makes her home in Murray, KY. Her outstanding third album Planting By The Signs is available everywhere now. Goodman’s music has been a constant in my life since her debut solo record Old Time Feeling dropped in 2020. She is a storyteller with few peers who blends soul, country, indie rock, blues- all the things, to create her signature sound.

I have been wanting to have S.G. on the show for five years and it has now become a reality. We caught up via Zoom while I was staying at the KOA campground in Nashville, TN, during my Grounded Summer tour where I covered Bonnaroo and spent some time throughout the South. If you are interested in hearing more stories from that experience, check out our podcast feed and marinadepodcast.com. Y’all, this was such an honor. This was even cooler than I could have imagined and I am so grateful to bring you my conversation with S.G. Goodman.

Preston Canavan | The Marinade Episode 191

Preston Canavan is a comedian from Winter Park, FL, who is one of my favorites doing it right now. I have the pleasure of getting to see him perform at my favorite third space in the world, Barley and Vine Biergarten just steps away from my home. Every time I have seen Preston perform, he has left me doubled over laughing.

This conversation was no exception. Y’all, I am sometimes a dumb dumb. I am learning how to use fancy new equipment gifted by one of our wonderful Patreon patrons Seth Gill. Aaaand, I didn’t record the first conversation with Preston. He came over on a Thursday, we caught lightning in a bottle, and it only exists as a cell phone video.

Have no fear, dear listener. First, I published the video in its entirety - bloopers and all - on our Patreon. You can watch that by subscribing or you can pay for it a la carte. I promise it’s worth the watch.

Second, Preston being the sweetheart he is, agreed to come over a second time and we had another incredible conversation. I know I say this is one of my favorites all the time, but this is one of my all time favorites. Preston is a bright light and I am so grateful for these conversations. Everyone, it is my honor to bring you my conversation with Preston Canavan.

Kelsey Waldon | The Marinade Episode 190

Kelsey Waldon has established herself as an artist firmly in tune with herself as a writer yet not content with resting on her sterling reputation. With each record her pen has further flowered, culminating in this instance with an invigorating album that pays homage to country music’s past while forging toward a confessional, self-reflective, vulnerable brand of tunes that stands out even among many of her esteemed peers.

Given that she was introduced to a broader audience when she signed with the late, legendary John Prine’s Oh Boy Records in 2019, one would be forgiven for thinking Kelsey is relatively new to the music scene. On the contrary, she has paid her dues and the years of honing her craft jump out on Every Ghost.

Matt Andersen | The Marinade Episode 187

Matt Andersen is a singer and songwriter from New Brunswick, Canada whose career has spanned over twenty years and somehow, despite his work being very much in my wheelhouse, I am just now learning about it all. This man’s voice, his playing, his writing- it all shines on each of his records and especially so on his new record The Hammer & The Rose. The Hammer & The Rose was released on April 25, 2025 and it is squarely on my 2025 superlatives list.

Before I get to my conversation with Matt, I want to thank three new Patreon patrons! Bob Beatty, Seth Gill, and Tom Romito have all joined our Patreon community lately. Patreon.com/marinadepodcast if you would like to support The Marinade and enjoy some bonus content.

The song you are hearing in this episode is "Tonight Belongs To You" from Matt's new album The Hammer & The Rose.

Kyle Keller is a singer and songwriter who currently makes his home in Gainesville, FL (Go Gators!). Kyle’s sophomore record The Great American Highway was released in the summer of 2023 and it’s a delight that gives and gives. So is the man himself as you will hear in this episode.

I have known Kyle for several years. He and my dear friend Jordan Foley are very close and the three of us sat having tea and talking about life here in my beloved Milk District in Orlando then walked over to the porch of Barley and Vine Biergarten to record. It was a gorgeous April day that was a long time coming.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 100 | Ryan Anderson of Bendigo Fletcher

Ryan Anderson gallops into The Marinade. Ryan is the lead singer and principal songwriter for the band Bendigo Fletcher, whose latest record Fits of Laughter is one of our favorites of the year.

This episode is the third in our Americanafest 2021 series. I was fortunate to travel to Nashville, TN, for a weekend in September. I got to spend time with wonderful creatives and saw outstanding sets from AHI, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Van Plating, Tre Burt, Great Peacock, Matthew Fowler, and several more. If you ever have the chance to go to Americanafest, do it. The folks whose music you love are not only playing sets all over town but also just mingling in the crowd. And, to a person the folks I got to meet and hang out with was a pure delight.

This conversation with Ryan got real deep real fast and we are so excited to bring it your way.

Seth Walker enters the Marinade! Seth is a singer, songwriter, and all around delightful human being. He has written with the likes of Oliver Wood from The Wood Brothers and continues to make genre-defying tunes that come from the heart.
