The Builders and the Butchers came into my life at a very formative time with their debut self-titled record in 2007. I was in my 20s, trying to figure out what adult me would look like- a little angsty, disillusioned yet hopeful, and curious about the world. Ryan Sollee’s tunes seemed to capture what I was feeling. 

All these years later, The Builders and the Butchers have a wonderful new record of foot-stomping anthems called Hell & High Water, which was released on May 6th, 2022. This conversation is such a thrill, y’all.

Hard Luck Love Song was inspired by the Todd Snider song “Just Like Old Times.” Snider is of course a frequent subject of conversation on this podcast and one of the most beloved guests in The Marinade’s history.

Hard Luck Love Song is a film in the spirit of The Marinade not only because of the Todd connection. It is a work born of a fit of inspiration, an improbable explosion of creativity from a filmmaker who had a vision, big dreams, and an uncompromising will to make his work come to life.
