Owen Burton is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago who now calls Nashville home. He came to my attention by making one of my favorite records in a long time. Ovven is the name of the project. Gnawing at the Cord is the name of the album. We talk quite a bit about how the record came together, so I’ll save that for the man himself to relay.
The story around all of this is worth mentioning. I covered Americanafest 2026 last month and got to see Ovven live at The Blue Room in Nashville. The Blue Room is a venue in Jack White’s Third Man Records compound. Bob Beatty and I went together. Brown Horse preceded Ovven’s set. I’m forever charmed by my future home of Nashville and this night exemplifies why.
The Marinade is nine years old. I've had heroes on the show. Strangers. And everyone in between. It is always a treat to talk with someone who makes their art DIY.
I posted a shitty cell phone photo of Ovven that night and Owen responded with gratitude. So I invited him to be a guest on The Marinade and not only did he agreed. We caught up in person before I left town for Florida that Sunday. Y’all, I am so excited to bring you my conversation with Owen Burton.
