Zach Russell | The Marinade Episode 152

Welcome to The Marinade, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff.

This is Episode 152 and our guest is Zach Russell. Zach is a singer and songwriter from Knoxville, TN whose debut full length record Where the Flowers Meet the Dew will be released on Friday, December 1, 2023. Where the Flowers Meet the Dew follows his debut EP The Creek which I highly recommend as well.

We went deep about religion, philosophy, and music on this one. But, we also had a lot of fun. I can’t overstate how much I needed this chat.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 146 | Jobi Riccio

Jobi Riccio hikes into The Marinade. Jobi is a singer and songwriter from Morrison, CO, whose debut album Whiplash on Yep Roc records has garnered praise from multi-Grammy award winning modern songwriting legend Jason Isbell.

Her Country author Marissa R. Moss in her Don’t Rock the Inbox newsletter said Riccio’s song “Sweet” is “A little bit classic country, a little bit nineties Sheryl Crow kiss-off, and that’s about as winning a combination as you can get.”

We caught up with Jobi via Zoom to talk about growing up in idyllic surroundings, commitment to craft, cultivating community, chronic dog boners (stay with us) and so much more.

The song you are hearing in this episode is "For Me It's You" from Jobi Riccio's Whiplash.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 143 | Jenny Owen Youngs

This is Episode 143 and our guest is Jenny Owen Youngs. Jenny is a singer, songwriter, author, and podcaster originally from New Jersey who now makes her home in Maine. She has written mega hits for the likes of Pitbull and Panic! At the Disco, but my introduction to her music was at Jack Rabbits, a small rock club in Jacksonville, FL, ten years ago. Jenny stood out on a stage that included heavyweight songwriters Chuck Ragan and Rocky Votolato. Her songs have been featured in the likes of Bojack Horseman, Grey’s Anatomy, and Weeds. Her Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast Buffering has spawned its own subculture.

It has been over a decade since Jenny’s last full length solo record but the wait is over this September. Her gorgeous collection of songs “Avalanche” is out on September 22, 2023. It is a stunning album that showcases all of what makes Jenny Owen Youngs a special creative human.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 141 | Willi Carlisle

This is Episode 141 and our guest is Willi Carlisle. Willi is a poet, actor, singer, songwriter - a manic expressive of the highest order. His infectious brand of folk storytelling continues to find larger and larger audiences, a phenomenon that requires only a listen to one of his incredible records or the witness of two minutes of his live performance to comprehend. We caught up with Willi after his set at the inaugural AVLFest in Asheville, North Carolina. This was the last day of the outstanding festival. I have to say a huge thanks to Wicked Weed Brewing and Worthwhile Sounds who sponsored the festival and Victory Lap Media for inviting us to cover AVLFest.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 114 | Michael McDermott Returns

To paraphrase BJ Barham, Michael McDermott has come out of the darkness to be the light.

His illustrious career goes back to the late 80s. For many folks he is the best songwriter you’ve never heard of. For others he is the voice of multiple generations. His most recent record St. Paul’s Boulevard is my favorite thing he has done. McDermott builds a world and trusts himself and his collaborators to guide but not lead the listener. It’s an immersive experience much like this conversation with the man himself.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 113 | Michaela Anne

Michaela Anne is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Nashville, TN. Her fifth full length record Oh To Be That Free was released on June 10th of 2022 on Yep Roc Records and it is a gorgeous, powerful collection of songs. Y’all, this may be the most personal and emotional conversation we have recorded on The Marinade and I am so grateful for Michaela’s presence and openness.

The Marinade with Jason Earle the Lost Episode 50 | Peter Haroldson Interviews Jason Earle

The Marinade with Jason Earle

This is the lost Episode 50 and our guest is our host Jason Earle. One of Jason's earliest thought partners for what would become The Marinade was his good friend Peter Haroldson. Peter is a kind, hilarious, and wildly intelligent guy.

When The Marinade first began, the idea of getting to episode number 50 seemed like some far off abstraction. Would anyone even care about this thing? Well, thankfully a lot of y’all do care and before long episode 50 was a reality. The plan as suggested by Peter was that episode 50 would be an interview of the host. But, at the time of number 50 Peter had moved to Minnesota and then the world shut down due to the COVID-19 crisis. Finally, in October of 2021, Jason flew to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and sat down on the other side of the desk to answer questions from his friend.

Special thanks to our good friend Patrick Hagerman whose tune Minneapolis is serving as the soundtrack to this episode. Patrick is hard at work on an album and we will bring you a conversation with him as soon as it is out in the world.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 108 | Izaak Opatz

Izaak Opatz is singer, songwriter, leather worker, and avid outdoorsman from Montana whose latest record Extra Medium was just released. I have had the pleasure of listening to Extra Medium for a while now and am crazy about it. Opatz is a one-of-a-kind songwriter whose unique skills shine on this record.

The song you are hearing in this episode is "Chinook Wind" from Extra Medium

I got to spend time with wonderful creatives and saw outstanding sets from AHI, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Van Plating, Tre Burt, Great Peacock, Matthew Fowler, and several more. If you ever have the chance to go to Americanafest, do it. The folks whose music you love are not only playing sets all over town but also just mingling in the crowd. And, to a person the folks I got to meet and hang out with was a pure delight.

This conversation with Ryan got real deep real fast and we are so excited to bring it your way.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 99 | Jeremie Albino

Albino has toured with the likes of St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Shovels and Rope, JD McPherson and more. His music is soul and blues, it is rock and country. He can sing, he can write, and damnit can he perform.

Pug has released a handful of excellent full length studio albums, a couple of equally outstanding EPs, and a must listen live record, Live at Lincoln Hall which includes Pug’s friend the great Strand of Oaks. His most recent album The Diving Sun is one of my favorite records of the year.
